I love Hollywood on Hollywood. No, that isn’t some weird TV show (at least, not that I know of), rather, it’s me saying I love it when a film is made that focusses on the film industry, the ins and outs, the parallels, the entire process. Film, as much work and sweat and blood as it is, is magic, when we see the final product, so it’s wonderful to see the people we’ve grown up adoring or idolizing get their moment on screen, portrayed lovingly by someone else, like a legend.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Finally taking advantage on his inevitable bankability, Jake Gyllenhaal takes the lead in his first summer action blockbuster, ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.’ Following in the vein of the ‘Mummy’ and the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series, producer Jerry Bruckheimer clearly strives at launching another franchise about an unlikely hero caught in an extraordinary situation. The famed ‘Donnie Darko’ star displays his rippling muscles as an adopted Prince, who has obviously being trained in the style of Parkour.

Hamlet (1996)

Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Hamlet’ is by far one of the best and most accomplished modern film versions of a William Shakespeare play. This is not only so because it is the first unabridged adaptation of the classic tale, clocking in at just over four hours, but also for the sheer fact that it is the first motion picture about the Danish prince that brings back the original story’s larger-than-life scale. Moviegoers, I’m sure, have seen several different Shakespearean films in their lifetime, from Olivier’s classic and trendsetting portrayals to Mel Gibson’s phony performance and Ethan Hawke’s emo-like dourness.

Casshern Sins: Part One

Anime is something I haven’t seen much of; to be completely honest I’ve only seen two anime films my entire life: Akira and Ninja Scroll. I really liked both of them, so I can’t explain why I haven’t seen any other anime title. Anime may be something I may want to start giving a rent, maybe one day I’ll even check out the famous Dragon Ball Z series that all my friends watched when I was in high school, or even Ghost in the Shell. Before then, I’ll get my feet wet with my first anime series, Casshern Sins.

Role Models

What do you do when you hate your life, and pretty much everything else? Not to mention your girlfriend just dumped you. Taste The Beast! If by “Taste the Beast” you mean go balls to the wall on Minotaur energy drinks, terrorize a school full of children, and ram a truck into a giant statue, you’d be Danny Donahue (Paul Rudd). By your side would be your accidental accomplice and best friend?umm co-worker, Wheeler (Sean William Scott).

The Wackness

1994 was a great year for hip hop. Classic albums like Nas’s Illmatic, Biggie Smalls (Notorious B.I.G)’s Ready To Die, Jeru The Damaja’s The Sun Rises In The East, The Roots’ Do You Want More?, and Outkast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik were released.

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne

They always say there are different strokes for different folks and in the case of today’s review that couldn’t be more true. When I think of cartoons or anime I always think of cute colorful little Japanese characters, think Pokémon or Dragon Ball, but today I got something completely different.

Set It Off

Unforgettable scenes can craft a movie, and a well made bank robbery sequence is an easy way to burn an image into the audience’s mind. Add in an element of mystery, and you can have an impact as large as even the best planning sequences. Everyone remembers the scenes in “Point Break,” due the masks of the former presidents.

There have been plenty of other movies about con men and their lonely, often depressing and solitary, existence. They live from one heist job to the next, always waiting for that one, big score that puts them on easy street for the rest of their life. It’s as risky of a retirement plan as the 401ks from a banking industry in today’s economic downturn. Sometimes, these same deadbeat swindlers are portrayed as failed fathers to children full of resentment and animosity.

Gunslinger Girl: The Complete First Season

Children as assassins, a seemingly ridiculous notion, though in the world of Gunslinger Girl you might end laughing at the end of a gun barrel held by a innocent girl. What’s a little girl doing toting around an FN P90? She’s just doing the best she can to live the life she’s been given. Part human, and mostly machine, she’s a cyborg with all the emotions of a young girl underneath her tough exterior.
